Swine Flu Recommendations

Having sought advice of the Public Health Authority on the matter of swine flu I have decided to reactivate the following recommendations originally issued on 9th October 2009.

Hygiene

All parishioners are reminded of good hygiene practice as recommended by the public health authority; if anyone has flu-like symptoms they should stay at home, advise their G.P. and not attend any church liturgies, i.e. Mass, Baptisms, Funerals… the obligation to attend Sunday Mass does not apply in cases of sickness.

Sign of Peace

The immediate suspension of the Sign of Peace at Mass. This should not be replaced with any other form of a sign of peace. (i.e.The Agnus Dei should start immediately after, “The Peace of the Lord be with you always.”)

Communion

The immediate suspension of Communion under both species for the congregation, assisting ministers and extra-ordinary ministers. Other provisions may need to be made for those who suffer from a coeliac condition, such as separate chalices.

The immediate recommendation that Holy Communion should be received only in the hand. (It must be acknowledged that the reception of Holy Communion on the tongue cannot be refused, but in light of the present circumstances reception in the hand is to be strongly encouraged and urged upon the congregation. Extraordinary ministers must be made aware of this.)

This might provide an opportunity for the Priest to remind his parishioners of the liturgical norms for the reception of Communion in the hand. In particular, pre-Confirmation children should be introduced to this practice immediately.

Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are to be especially minded of good hygiene practices. Provision should be made for all ministers to use alcohol gel or wash their hands in warm soapy water before Mass and after the distribution of Holy Communion. This should not be in the Sanctuary or at the Altar; it is not a ritual action.

First Friday

It is suggested that for First Friday sick calls Priests might carry a small container of alcohol hand gel to prevent the spread of infection.

In an emergency, it is recommended that only the priest, and not an extraordinary minister, should visit the home of someone with swine flu.

Priests Themselves

As is the present practice, if a Priest finds himself unable to fulfil his pastoral duties, he should immediately inform the Vicar Forane who will arrange to provide cover. He should also inform the Diocesan Office.

If the Priest in question is the V.F. himself, he should inform the Diocesan Office and contact another member of the Vicariate to arrange cover.

Wishing you God’s blessing,

Yours in Christ,

 + Noel Treanor
